What are the Advantages of having a Glazed Canopy?

Can decorate melamine dishes at home and then polish them?
I would add my own digital art to melamine plates and wondered if only I could buy dinner plates and add the same design, through some type of transfer, and then polish?
Of course, if you will not use to eat. I guess when you say, "enamel", which means some kind of polyurethane coating? Real food quality enamel should be fired in an oven and, of course, melamine plates not stand it.
