Polish Retired
Was the "Little Polish Boy Standing with arms" is never identified?

I recently noticed the above mentioned poem by Peter L. Fischl Holocaust was based on a photo. I am well aware of the facts of the Holocaust, and have read a lot on the subject, but never really felt the horror and sadness of this event until I read the poem and saw the photo of the underlying. I can not even think of this poem without tears. Maybe it's because I am a father now, I do not know … I wonder if anyone ever traced the identity of the little Polish boy. I guess I'm expecting a happy ending where he is now a happy life, the grandfather retired in Poland or in Canada or the USA, but I'm afraid the story has a happy ending.

Artur Dab Siemiatek, Levi Zelinwarger, and is believed Tsvi Nussbaum that are possible identities of the children

The last of the obsidian artifacts in Puerto Vallarta

More than 30 years ago during one of our first visits to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, during navigation through a small souvenir shop, we noticed a handful of small black objects high on a shelf back corner. They were covered dust and obviously had not been touched for years. We asked the shop owner what they were and they said they were obsidian artifacts, suggesting that were very old and that obsidian was quite rare and virtually approaching extinction. Since this was the first time we had ever seen obsidian and being quite naïve, we thought could be a good investment and nice conversation pieces, so we buy everything I had, probably in their asking price!

Before we learn about obsidian, we ask exactly what are artifacts? Archaeologists define objects as objects such as pottery, jewelry, weapons, projectile points, tools, ritual objects, etc. that were made or modified by humans of earlier cultures. In our minds, that meant that the figurines were purchased hundreds if not thousands of years and is composed of a Very Rare and unusual black material shone like glass. Wow, what a find!

Well, let's determine what that obsidian is and how they formed. Moreover, we will first define what is not is not a mineral, because all minerals are crystalline and obsidian is not crystalline! The Obsidian is sometimes classified as a mineral, but its composition is too complex to be a single mineral. Obsidian is actually a natural translucent glass formed as rapidly cooled rhyolite lava is expelled from an active volcano. The lava flow is generally temperate, in the presence of water, causing it to freeze so fast the time required for crystal growth is lacking. These obsidian flows generally consist of glass, more than 70% silicon dioxide. Very rarely is obsidian colorless, most of the times is very dark or black due to impurities such as magnetite and hematite, both changes being iron oxide. Other impurities such as magnesium and titanium oxides can give colors ranging from brown to green, while the fine gas bubbles or other inclusions create endless beautiful colors and brightness.

Then where do you find obsidian? Obsidian is found in a number of regions around the world, basically any place a volcano in the vicinity of water. In Mexico, the Trans Mexican Volcanic Belt extends from Puerto Vallarta on Banderas Bay in the state of Jalisco to the end of the whole country to the Gulf of Mexico. Deposits of obsidian are present throughout this region with some of the most important are in the state of Jalisco, within a hundred miles of Vallarta. A region known as the Tequila Valley, located in the Magdalena and La Vega basins of the lakes near the city of Teuchitlán, Jalisco, is the location of 9,600 meters above sea level Tequila Volcano, which erupted about 200,000 years ago. Now we know our own shop environment was not totally wrong when he told us that our precious memories were old, at least the obsidian were age was!

Obsidian, called itztli in the Nahuatl language, has been found in almost all archaeological sites in Mesoamerica and can easily be dated and traced back to its place of origin. One such site Jalisco is located in the Teuchitlán (in the Nahuatl language, the place of the first God) area that was home to a pre-Hispanic civilization, with around 25,000 50,000 people over 2,000 years ago. This mysterious civilization which lasted until about 1,000 years ago was not the Aztecs, Toltecs, Mayas, or. In fact, until Today, nobody knows for sure who they were. The economy of this ancient metropolis, referred to as the site Guachimontes, was built on mining, work, and trade of obsidian, one of the most precious materials in early Mesoamerica. Obsidian was revered by ancient cultures and was one of the main materials barter prized for its ability to be worked on the sharp edges of arrows and spears. Because most low obsidian in transport and the resulting large amount of useful articles that could be produced from a small amount of material, it requires less effort in trade which in turn has contributed to widespread use of obsidian. For many centuries, Teuchitlán culture was central western Mexico with a commercial network along a coastal route that extends from Guatemala to Arizona.

The old site Guachimontes is an unusual number of circular shaped pyramids, each with a shaft tomb. Since discovering the site in 1970 and begin formal exploration in 1999, Archaeologists excavating the shaft tombs have recovered a huge number of obsidian artifacts including tools, weapons, jewelry, ritual items, figures, masks, and even mirrors. This newly discovered site is so important that the July 12, 2006, was added to the World Heritage List by the World Heritage Committee of the Unesco. It is located in a region rich in mineral resources and obsidian, and well worth the trip days 10 hours Vallarta. Obviously, the items purchased ago 30 years were not of this site from the excavation had not yet started at that time!

Obsidian is said to have healing properties, protection very sensitive of depression and blocking negativity of any kind. Some argue that is the cornerstone of good-hearted people of the world soft and smooth. More importantly, is currently being used in cardiac surgery, as well-crafted obsidian blades have a cutting edge many times sharper than High Quality steel surgical scalpels, with the edge of the blade being only about 3 nanometers wide. The manufacture of these instruments is possible due to the fact that obsidian not have a crystalline structure, so it can be perfected to its molecular size.

Today, You Can find beautiful examples of the masks highly polished ancient ritual objects, animal figures, jewelry, etc of every imaginable color and dark in almost every store in Vallarta. They make wonderful gifts and display pieces as souvenir of your visit to Puerto Vallarta, just not as rare artifacts representing Mexican! Perhaps did not get the last of the obsidian artifacts 30 years ago, but 3.00 dollars each, you could say we got what we paid for!
