Tips on how to learn a foreign language

The reason I am writing an article one of this type is because I I feel qualified to do so, because I speak five languages fluently along with having been a teacher of English as a Second Language at the English School that opened in Warsaw ago 5. He has been in recent years I have learned the secrets of the trade, now I want to share with those who choose to read this article.

When referring to the languages I speak are English, French, Spanish, Italian and Polish That for many may seem an impressive number, but before that some idea that I should be admired for my language skills I would say that this is due more to the circumstances after skill. First I was born New York, where I spent the first three months before being sent to live with my grandparents who spoke Spanish and Italian and languages expected to be started speak Spanish and Italian. At the time I was five years old spoke both languages, however I did not speak English at all so it was with this in mind, among other things that my parents brought me back to New York, where I began to learn English. It was strange for me at first, going to school in a country that was Hearing my people speaking a language I did not understand. With time, however since I was still at that early age at which languages come easily; English started growing more understandable and more and in a big way was the cartoons on TV I saw that I had seen in Spanish that helped me. It is because of this factor that I experienced when I learned English at age 5 that I can pretend that they're very young age, do not need languages taught to them as they learn their own account. It is with this in mind I urge parents whose desire is to ensure that their children learn a foreign language or two, just to expose their children to language as I do for my parents has sent me to a school where everyone speaks English.

Of course, in giving this advice I have not lost sight of the fact that not all parents have at their available the possibility of sending their children to a school where the language they want their child to learn is spoken either because they live in a country where people speak or do not have funds to send their children to a school where all subjects are conducted in that language. It is to these parents suggest that constant exposure to the language by all the means at its disposal would be more appropriate. When I say this I mean parents, of course, if they speak the language in question should do so with their children, which basically is the most people speak a language at the beginning, from his parents.

However, for those parents Who Are not speakers of the language they want their child or children to learn then I would suggest the exposure of their child or children in the language chosen by the television as "Cartoon Network" or perhaps movies on DVD. As the idea of continuing the child first see the movie in their native language and then in the second, repeating this process many times as possible every day. For many parents that their children may seem like a waste of time only when they sit watching television and largely do, but time spent watching Television need not be a waste of time especially if You Can help your child learn a foreign language. I recall in my many years as an ESL (English as a Second Language) teacher, a child of five years. It was this child who speaks fluent English. Naturally grammatical errors but again what your child age does not. As for his accent I can say that this child seriously Warsaw, Poland speak English without a trace in his voice that would have given even a foreign accent trained ear like mine was not American. One would think like me that this child had spent time in the United States or another English speaking country or their parents were English speakers, but when I asked the boy's mother informed him that this child had no standing in an English speaking neither she or her husband spoke no English what so ever. As for the lessons in question had only offered in the public school attended who do not exceed the level that is have taught the basics. My curiosity took hold of my actions at this time makes me wonder how it was possible for your child to speak English fluently, as any American child's age, even without the slightest trace of foreign accent. To this question I found the answer that this child was "Cartoon Network" in English virtually 24 hours a day.

If there is an unfortunate side language learning is that those who did not start very early in life will be mostly always at a disadvantage to those who did. They tend to speak with an accent that are classified as aliens and fight for the most part with grammar but I'm not saying this to the objective of discouraging, but to inform that start beyond the age of 10 will have to work harder. Of course, this does not mean they will not learn and learn well, but perhaps some nuances of the language is lost for them.

Many are the reasons for wanting or needing to learn a language to live in a country in search of employment to many others that I will not review all of them though, as many as there are also reasons to be methods. If the later is the case I found where the "target" to be the most efficient when the matter is simply learning to communicate. As this is what most people want to get when studying a language. Through communication I have in mind to learn to understand and be understood in a second language by its own power is not concentrated so much on grammar standards, but how to speak a language using correct grammar without having to necessarily go into a lot of rules that do not necessarily make a better speaker. I in my fourteen years as an ESL (English as a Second Language) teacher has come to discover that they know better the rules, for example, when to use "Present perfect" as opposed to when to use "simple past" does not always speak more grammatically correct but it is important to have a basic understanding of the times if you go to use them correctly. During the course of this time is not much that I taught my students, but also much I discovered for myself, both my students and teaching and here are some tips that I would offer to those seeking to learn a language:

-Find a teacher or a school, what is most important for beginners as languages are not like the story that can be learned only by reading it. Languages Spoken require the party who is learning how to pronounce words in languages that are not always systematically phonetic and for that reason I recommend getting a teacher. For the total beginners also suggest from a group, because at first what people need most is repetition. For example, a teacher can begin with each student who says "My name is ___." and whether there should be 20 students in the class then we hear this phrase repeated as many times and therefore making it demonstrable that the sentence will stick in your mind then if we had just heard repeated twice. Granted groups advance more slowly but the speed in which we cover the material is not the issue, but what it is, is how much of what we absorb and everything I realized when I was studying French and Polish How easy it was to learn things because of the repetitive nature that are in groups.

"When learning a second language, the language we think we are trying to learn. There are those however who can say that for beginners this is possible or desirable but which I would say that on the contrary it is. The reason I say this is for example if a person is learning Spanish and the first sentence he faces is "My name ___." (My name is ____.) then he or it should read that sentence does not translate into English and then repeated in Spanish, but knowing what the sentence and simply repeats it. This method may be slower at first, but will be worth the future because if the student can say the phrase in the target language without translating in his mind that this will make students to learn to talk like that person will be able to speak without thinking in words. fluent is when a person has an idea and can put that idea in words without thinking of the words because they come automatically. Naturally, this does not mean that if a person speaks a language fluently he or she speaks the language correctly and they are two different things. Fluency is concerned with how much time elapses from the moment the thought enters the mind until the words come out and nothing else. Many of my many times students have asked me how they can think in the language they are speaking and I have to say the following. When speaking or repeating a phrase or word in one language must claim that one language is spoken or know of a language is trying to speak. In other words one must forget all the other languages you can speak and if one does speaking a foreign language fluently will be easier; reason is that the translation as you go along a slowdown. This is even more true when listening to a language and that if I had to stop and translate each word into another language is being said to us by the time he translated the first word the entire sentence would have passed so with this in mind, I say we should only think in the language we're talking or listening to forsake all others.

"To learn a language, when we want to translate a phrase, what we do is translate the general idea of the sentence and not word for word but as a whole and that is where we see the general idea. By example in Italian you say "I Io chiamo Gianni" which translated word for word would be "My name is Gianni" which in English does not have the same meaning. This, however if translated not word for word, but the general idea we would get "My name is Gianni." The reason for this is presented as the truth is each language is different and not only that words are different, but their grammar. Grammar is the order in which words instead. Sometimes, however, is not an issue grammar which is itself a difference of one language to another. As an example I can give Polish employs only three times (past, present and future) and has no articles definite or indefinite, but the way people. For example in French is correct to say "J" ai 40 ans, "which when translated directly into English would be" I have 40 years ", which in proper English would be" I am "40 years of age. This proof of my point that it is not always a matter of grammar, but the way people talk in different languages doing the same thing expressed differently. As an example I can give added that in Polish "the phrase Happy Birthday" exists only in its place the Polish people say (from a literal translation) "all the best wishes."

"I never ask why! In languages is not important to know why Poland does not use articles or why English does not have items that differentiate the genera such as French, that is in the form or "le" and "have" and why Spanish and Italian, do not use the letter "k" to write some of his own words. The important thing is to understand how language is and speak as such and not waste time analyzing why it is a form or was made one way and not another. Knowing this, and if one could even determine why not help us to speak the language that they are trying to learn more then know why most of us have two eyes instead of three we help them see better. So in short do not worry about why so accept it and speak or write as such.

Languages do not require thought or at least none that is analytical, but the ability to understand a situation and repeat the phrase that explains to someone else. For example, when we say "This is a pen. "Establish what something is and if the object were setting a table, then the structure will be the same" This is a table. "These two sentences only requires that we change a word but not the structure that should not change because the situation has not changed.

"Do not be afraid to make mistakes. By learning a language mistakes are as inevitable as it is falling to a child learning to walk. If the child or their parents were afraid of dropping your child that child never learn to walk, the same with languages. I always tell my students that if they can avoid the mistakes they should at least try to learn from them. One of the reasons people are afraid or ashamed of mistakes is probably what other people think. This logically if you think you should not be a problem as they are aware means that the person speaking is not a native speaker of that language and includes not only if that person makes some mistakes but will not think less of that person to do so.

-Use good grammar is not the most important thing! Unless we are teachers or writers of that language in that language grammar is not is therefore most important, if you Just Want other people to understand what we are saying. Grammar only becomes a problem when we are misunderstood or not all. For example, if I heard Someone Say "I had bought a book yesterday" I understand that this person bought a book yesterday. This despite the fact that he or she uses past "perfect" in a situation where he or she should have used "the simple past. So my advice to spoken a foreign language is not worrying about what is grammatically correct and just talk.

Practice as much as possible! To learn a language well we have to have at least 20 hours a week contact with the language. By this I mean to take classes, but not enough. For example, if a person took piano lessons this would not be enough to learn the piano like that person should have a piano that he or she could practice at home otherwise the classes would not be so beneficial. That said what I recommend to those who do not live in a country where I want to learn the language spoken is to seek more contact with the target language as possible. Can be in the form of watching television in that language, making friends with people who speak that language or simply a romantic friendship also contribute to a needs language apart from everything else.

"The four parties are the following language: speaking, reading part, written and comprehension oral. To practice the past all we need is to see films in that language maybe even with subtitles. With regard to reading this should be done for any reason is the best way for us to expand our vocabulary in the language you have time to search for words that do not understand. The writing should be improved by reading it after to see the words many times this is because learning how to write. The talk is perhaps the most difficult to practice because it is wiser to not do this alone as this would require an answer to yourself.

In all my years as a language teacher and language student has been my experience that has taught me that in speaking or learning a language as in life all we can do is our best and expect only so with this in mind, let those who should read this with the following thought. It is better to speak a language is not bad at all, because then if you really think how many people speak a language perfectly grammatical even his own left alone a second or abroad.
