Printing North Vietnam: Part 2: Hanoi in my eye
My overall impression of Hanoi is a city is physically easy to find. The air is breathable tolerable noise, low pollution. The smell of baking bread, burning incense and market fresh produce fills charming streets, characterized by exotic Asian touches in the context of French colonial splendor. colorful shops, bright silk and lacquer ware lamps are a dangerous temptation, culinary delights while inviting in all directions.
Hanoi, capital of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, has emerged in the 21 st century as a sophisticated, thriving, driven by foreign investment and the revival of tourism. But despite the overwhelming abundance of coffee shops and boutique style jewelry designers, gifts and apparel, the heart and soul of Hanoi remains the Casco Viejo, with its lively streets selling everything from spices to the tombstones.
For a perspective old general, it is advisable to start your shopping in one cycle (bicycle rickshaws) – drivers will take you on a loop of the main tourist attractions allowing you to navigate and plan your attack. This point of view of entertainment center also provides great photo opportunities as well as being a fun introduction to Vietnamese culture.
Controlling the streets of Hanoi are charming French colonial facades, the legacy of 100 years of French rule. Above Store Ground-level rise three or four floors with apartments elegant lace balconies decorated with iron, distressed paint, plantation and exuberant vegetation, while on a larger scale, is the magnificent Opera House and the classic white exterior of the Metropole Hotel, the most elegant historic hotel in the city.
However, it is a building with a very different style architecture that has become the symbol of this northern city. Ho Chi Minh mausoleum is a monument severe and imposing the true Soviet tradition, sad and gray, surrounded by a huge square, empty. This building, which houses the body of Vietnam's most beloved leader has become a symbol of national struggle for freedom. The locals see it as a place of pilgrimage, often lined for hours to see the embalmed body the great "Uncle Ho", extends under the lights with his patrician peaceful expression, on display for all eternity.
Foreigners interested his respects are privileged with a separate entry line (and fast) to the premises. There is a strict code of conduct for anyone enter the mausoleum – no shorts, mini skirts, hats or T-shirt, no photo, no hands in his pockets and definitely not talking. Guards Soft White uniforms are quick to punish anyone who violates these rules, and the continuous line of visitors was rapidly introduced beyond the body embalmed no chance of staying on the macabre vision.
Ironically, it was Ho's request to be cremated after his death, according to their simple lifestyle. Proof of this is just a short walk from the mausoleum where his house is charming wooden stilts parkland overlooking a tranquil lake. Ho lived here during the 10 years before his death, and has been preserved exactly how he left her – with books, typewriters and traditional Vietnamese artifacts scattered around, the situation austerity and good taste in stark contrast to his final resting place.
Another quiet neighborhood surrounding the city is the Temple of Literature, a temple of Confucius dates back to 1070 AD. This was the first university in the country, a place of education for an elite minority lucky to be accepted into its hallowed halls. The students achieving doctorates had their names appear on plaques of 82 set in the back of stone turtles, which today are considered the most precious artifacts in the temple.
After a busy day of shopping and sightseeing, what better way to recharge batteries in one of Hanoi's superb restaurants and cafes. The dining scene is varied, affordable and delicious, including traditional Vietnamese, French and international offerings. first time visitors should try the Vietnamese staple, Pho (The pronounced 'skin') – spicy noodle soup Herby, recently served mixed with chile and lime – just delicious!
If the fine dining of Vietnam haunts the taste buds, who likes to take the experience One Step further in the kitchen of the Hotel Metropole School. A half-day course includes a visit to a local market to select the freshest ingredients, followed by a cooking demonstration and lunch. Recipes include Vietnamese spring rolls, delicately wrapped in rice paper and served with fish sauce, chile and papaya skewers grilled chicken wrapped in lemon leaves, and pork grilled marinated bamboo. Satisfaction full stomach and a new enthusiasm for experimentation in the kitchen are guaranteed!
My overall impression of Hanoi is all that seems to be small and charming. All programs offered by tour operators to Hanoi often last half or one day. He recommended that I should always spend some free time – An activity called ordinary travel – to get Your Own unique experience
