Chihuahua's recent history can be traced to the mid-1800s Mexico, however, the Chi Chi seems to have far deeper roots. The Chihuahua may have originated as early as the 9th century, developing a toy breed that was revered by Toltec Indians of Central America during that time. They called the dog "Techichi." However, other major pre-Columbian civilizations, the Mayas and Aztecs also show a close association with sandy-colored small dog. It is quite certain that these dogs mixed in varying degrees, with a small hairless dog native to Mexico and having a name taken from Star Wars. . . Xoloitzcuintli, thus becoming the forerunners of the Chihuahua we know today.
